Project | La Finca
Inspired by rural precedents in Latin America, La Finca is a low-maintenance country house that serves as a family getaway to relax and entertain away from the city. The program includes three bedrooms and a generous public zone organized around the kitchen. The design is based on a minimal, open-plan layout structured by a modular grid that distributes the program into two-thirds public and one-third private space. Within this framework, a glass façade system fills the structural bays, preserving expansive views of the Hill Country.
The remote site made transporting materials and trades costly, so the design emphasizes efficiency and prefabrication. A pier foundation minimizes concrete use while providing flood protection. Off-the-shelf steel framing was prefabricated and bolted together on site, with glazing directly adhered to steel angles. Deep structural overhangs reduce solar heat gain, while warm wood finishes—including Douglas Fir roof decking that is expressed as the finish ceiling—create an inviting atmosphere.
