Mañana Boat Dock

Mañana Boat Dock

The Mañana Boat Dock embraces the interplay of dappled sunlight, cool breezes, and sweeping vistas to transcend the appearance and function of a typical boat dock.

Composed of a floating box wrapped in ribbons of thin steel tubes, the Mañana Boat Dock is about creating a design that captures the sensations of being on the water. It is a structure that embraces the interplay of dappled sunlight, cool breezes, and sweeping vistas to transcend the appearance and function of a typical boat dock.

The signature steel tubes act as both structure and sunshade, supporting the upper and lower decks while filtering sunlight and framing views. Extensive solar studies informed variations in the length and spacing of the tubes, which cluster together to block undesired exposures, while opening up on the less exposed faces of the volume. At the lower level, the tubes wrap underneath to form the boat slips, and create a double-height stairwell that ascends to the upper deck. On the upper level, visitors are met with a generous sun deck before entering an airy screen porch, where the combination of warm sunlight and cool breezes is meant to mirror the experience of being out on the water.
