This addition to the Alumni Center grounds extends the possible uses of the facility by creating an outdoor pavilion amidst the trees along Waller Creek. Flanking the football stadium, the pavilion offers a location for pre-game events and post-game parties, as well as lectures and presentations. The speakers, A/V connections and moveable spotlights provide flexibility for a variety of events. Integral fans, indirect lighting, and roll-down sunshades allow events to occur all year round and at any time of day.
The expressive structure of the pavilion takes its roots from the existing Alumni Center trellises. Enlarged to span a 40’ x 60’ space, the beams, trusses and glass roof form a system carefully balanced upon two brick columns and stabilized on either side by post-tensioned stainless steel cables. The surrounding trees reach through the open edges of the roof structure. At night, lights within the truss system turn the roof into a glowing lantern.
