Built in 1897, Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel on the St. Edward's University campus has served as an exhibition hall, workshop, auditorium, theater, and armory before its conversion to a place of worship. This proposal seeks to expand the chapel's role as a center of academic, social, and religious life on campus by taking advantage of and strengthening existing circulation paths and relationships according to the campus master plan.
A pair of monumental sliding glass doors opens onto a new deck shaded by a canopy of existing trees. The white plank siding of the chapel is extruded horizontally to form an entrance gate and fountain. A new campus ministry building defines a monastery-like courtyard intended for a variety of activities, from individual reflection to gatherings of groups ranging in size from 20 to 1000.
